Ruby, is the popular red variety from the multi-colored Corundum family.   Ruby is a common mineral found in many countries however it is rarely found in clear, transparent crystals of large size. Only very few ruby crystals were given the ideal conditions in which they could grow undisturbed to considerable sizes and crystallize to form perfect gemstones. For this reason, Rubies of more than 3 carats in size are very rare and it is no wonder that Rubies with few inclusions and good color are so valuable  they achieve top prices at auctions, surpassing even those paid for diamonds in the same category.

Ruby is found in Myanmar (formerly Burma), Madagascar, Vietnam, India, Africa and Pakistan among others.  It is found in many hues from pink through to dark red with Myanmar traditionally being the source of the finest Ruby available.  Traditionally the Ruby from Myanmar is characterized by a slight hot pink overtone.  It`s hardness of course is 9 on the Mohs scale and this makes it along with Sapphire, its twin,  a superbly durable stone.

One of the legends of Ruby was that "the lucky owner of a fine Ruby was said to be assured of a life lived in peace and concord with all people.  Their land and rank would never be taken and the house and garden would be saved from damage by tempests."

Ruby is said to be a powerful heart stone, opening and activating the heart chakra.  Ruby protects against the loss of heart energy, and dissolves emotional congestion.  A powerful heart healer, Ruby heals and balances emotions, makes you more emotionally aware, and helps you connect to others emotionally.  The intense and vivid energy of Ruby stimulates loving emotions, helps with the expression of love, and can facilitate states of passion and bliss.
